Research and Third Degree Burns

5/8/14
I researched how prosthetics were made and saw it wasn't an easy task to accomplish quickly or easily. It takes either a full day or a couple of days to make and finish a prosthetic, also depending on the size of the prosthetic being made. I also learned that I can use liquid latex as a substitute of scar wax. With liquid latex, it takes time to dry, probably around 10 minutes. However, about 7 or 8 layers of this product are needed to be applied, also depending of the type of work needed, but it usually will need many layers. I am able to replace scar wax with liquid latex if needed to make third degree burns. Speaking of burns, I did create a small burn look on my hand as well. It took time since I needed the liquid latex it dry. I created a few big holes into the now dry latex, and a few small ones. Not perfect circles, since I wanted to make it look realistic. I then applied some red and purple from the color pallets onto the inside of the holes and around it. I then outlined the inside of the holes with a black and red mix to give it depth. After, I applied some Vaseline to give it the new layer of skin look. It took a while to make this but it was fun to do.

Cuts and Bruises

5/4/14
I was making multiple cuts and bruises to get to the right colors and shades to see which batch is made the best in order to see which has the most realistic looking cuts and bruises. I figured out how to get that realistic look. You need the right amount of red and purple. Not too much but more of a translucent look. Also an older bruise would need the color yellow and purple with a little bit of brown. The cuts take longer to make since I use scar wax. You have to mold the wax to the right size and the right shape. Then apply the wax onto the skin with spirit gum if it's going to be worm for a long period of time. From there I cut into the scar wax to create the depth of the look. I add the colors red and black on the inside to give it dimension, then add blood. Practicing helps to see the improvement you get and helps you to see the better way to do it.

Makeup For A Zombie Film!

5/3/14
I volunteered to help some students with doing their makeup for a zombie film they were working on for a project. It was fun since I haven't done a "zombie" look yet. I also did makeup for one student to make him look like he has a huge scar across the face. On another student I created a zombie bite to their hand and had an effect where the veins we're becoming more visible and around the bite was becoming red and purple from infection. On the "zombie" I added makeup under the eyes to create a sunken in eye effect and a fresh cut to the face. Also I added smeared blood on the lips as if they had just had a fresh snack. Creating the zombie look took quite some time.

Making Fake Blood

4/27/14
My mentor assigned a project for me, which was to create three different types of fake blood. The first had to be a lighter colored blood that would be fresh blood. The second had to be thicker and darker, as if it were an older blood sitting out for a while. The last blood just had to be edible, to apply safely to the mouth area when needed. For the first batch of fresh blood, I used corn syrup, red food coloring, a little black food coloring, and a bit of water. For the second batch, which would be the older, thicker blood, I used corn syrup, chocolate syrup, starch, red food coloring, green food coloring, and a little purple food coloring, a little bit of sun burn reliever (aloe vera) since it has a gel thicker consistency to it, and I also added a little bit of water. And the last batch was 100% edible, even though the first batch was edible as well, this is the darker version of an edible blood. I used ketchup, corn syrup, red food coloring and a little bit of green food coloring. It may not taste great, but it works. If someone would like to have the taste better, they can substitute the ketchup for a thick fruit punch.
With these bloods I creates different wounds: cuts, stitches, a ripped mouth.

"Infected" makeup look

4/26/14
I spent a couple hours creating a look that gave an almost realistic infected look. I first covered my face with a white grease paint; only enough where the skin looks naturally paler. I then applied a mixture of blue and purple and red grease paint from a bruise wheel onto the bottom of my eyes, to create a sunken in eye/tired/sick effect. I also applied this mixture to the sides of my nostrils and under my nose as well as the corners of my mouth. I added some neutral colored concealer and applied that onto my lips to give a pale look and also dry up my lips to give a sickly look to them. After the pale and sick look was done, I then added "veins" that looked visible to give the infected look. As easy as this sounds, it took a while to get the perfect shades and the more realistic look.

Makeup for actors

3/16/14
On Sunday, I spent 6 hours with my mentor. I woke up at 5, and she picked me up at 6 am. We went to this place that had a bunch of warehouses and one of those warehouses were being used for a film set. She originally had me go to watch and help her with cleaning makeup tools and handing them to her, but then one of the people in charge of the film needed the first makeup to be done quick. I eventually did several actors makeup, making them look like hostages that haven't showered in weeks and we're kept in an abandoned dirty warehouse. My mentor taught me what brushes to use for what makeup, and what sponged to use. I learned how to mix colors from the Bruise Wheel and I created a tired depressed look on the faces. I also used some brown powder to create the legitimate dirt look. After two hours of doing makeup I also got to apply this clear goo type of material to the girls hair to make it look like they haven't washed their hair in a while. I also gave one of the girl a cut on her lip. We got to watch them act and when needed I would go back for touch ups. Also I removed one of the girls makeup to change her character from a hostage to a healthy soldier. It ended at 12 and I helped clean the brushes and put the makeup away. It was a long morning but worth it to also get a clue of what I'm in for for my future.
